2022-23 Artist Residencies

Sharon Jones-Ryan

Sharon has spent several years reconnecting with a passion for ceramic pottery. Her creative goal for this artist residency is to rekindle a part of the tactile experience of eucharist at saint benedict’s table for those who are physically unable to ‘come to the table.’ Sharon will be making a series of single-serving communion bowl-and-plate sets that will be gifted to members of our online worship community.  She hopes that these sets will bring some of the intentionality and evocative dimensionality of the worship experience to those whose eucharist happens through their screens.

Trish Vrolijk

Trish is a musician and frequent member of the saint benedict’s table worship team. As Trish continues to grow as an artist, she has become passionate about sharing her songs with many different people, in many different ways. As such, this artist residency will help support Trish’s creative goal to professionally record the original song, “Still,” based on Psalms 27, 116 and 139. Jennifer Wiens

Jennifer is a writer who shares personal stories and experiences as a way to inspire others. Her creative goal for this artistic residency is to work on a draft of her personal memoir, a piece that explores Jennifer’s journey and how it has shaped and transformed both her faith and her outlook on life. Jennifer’s residency will include participation in a writing retreat designed to support regular written expression and development. You can read some of Jennifer’s writing here: jenniferjwiens.wordpress.com

Mark is a musician who recently completed a Masters of Arts in Music Composition from York University. His creative interest for this residency is to create a piece of music focused on the Passion. This expressive piece will place listeners within the drama of the crucifixion, and asks us to consider how our actions and inactions harm those around us, especially those who are already suffering. This new composition will debut on Good Friday, 2022.

Kevin Grummet

Kevin is an amateur photographer who alternately completes work for a variety of clients and personal projects. His creative goal for this residency is to create a series of 14 20”x30” canvas photographic prints for exhibition at saint benedict’s table (Sept. 2022) and Artbeat Inc. (Oct. 2022). This exhibition features images created entirely from his affordable housing apartment window during 2021 pandemic lockdowns.

Anna Goertzen Loeppky

Anna is a clay artist who focuses on creating functional pottery pieces that can be used in every day life. Responding to the pandemic-related need for building community online, Anna’s creative goal for her residency is to lead the community in making their own communion cups for taking communion at home. This workshop would use a simple pinch pot technique, drawing on what Anna describes as the meditative experience of working with clay.
