Identity, Culture, & Scripture: a conference talk

This podcast episode features a talk by Jamie Howison shared at an online conference entitled “Identity, Culture, and Scripture,” presented by the Diocese of Rupert’s Land Indigenous Ministry on June 12, 2021. Over the course of the day, attendees heard a number speakers explore their identity as “White and Christian,” “Black and Christian,” and “Native and Christian,” and then the panel discussion at which this talk was offered was convened.

Joining Jamie on the panel were Bishop Chris Harper of the Diocese of Saskatoon - the first Treaty 6 priest to be ordained a bishop - and The Rev. Chung Yan Lam 林頌恩, a Chinese immigrant from Hong Kong who is ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and currently serving an Anglican Parish in the Diocese of Ottawa. While those two speakers are not included in this podcast, their insights were much appreciated by the attendees.

The essay by Stanley Hauerwas that is featured in Jamie’s talk is “A Story-Formed Community: Reflections on Watership Down,” from A Community of Character, University of Notre Dame Press, 1981.

Thanks to The Rev. Vincent Solomon for organizing this event.
